The Roto-Molding Process Components

This molding method has been used since ancient times for creatingvseverl product lines. Egyptians for example, utilized rotational molding procedures in the creating of ceramics. The technique has however taken long to take affect because it was thought of to be a very slow process

1. Mould readying.
A fixed volume of polymer in powder form is loaded into a hollow mold. The mold is usually made from cast aluminium or sheet steel component. The coloring intended for the finished item is pre compounded into the polymer. The most typically used powder resin is polythene, but polyvinyl chloride and nylon can also be used in this design of plastic manufacturing.

Preheating of the oven starts, and it can be done by either conduction, convection or sometimes radiation. It is warmed to temperatures between 500-700F. The mold with the powdered polymer is then locked and positioned within the oven.

2. The heating and fusion phase.
Once within the oven, the mould is rotated on two axis so the powdered polymer liquefies from the heat and coats the inside if the mould. The rotation is done gradually, about 20 rotations per min. Something that is crucial at this point is the amount of time the mould will spend inside the oven. If it stays to long, the product will lose value and durability, creating a weak product. If it is removed from the oven too early, the polymer will not have flowed correctly, which develops bubbles in the finished item.

3. Mould cooling down.
When the material has completely spent the enough of time in the oven, it is then extracted for cooling. This can be done by air or water, or sometimes a mixture of both which a cool mist. When the component cools, it shrinks a little for ease of removal from the mold. This is yet another step that depends upon a lot on the correct timing, since rapid cooling shrinks the material too quickly, causing bending of the product.

4. The unloading or de-moulding phase.
As soon as the product within te mold has cooled successfully, the molder managing the procedure can then extract the completed product from the mould. The procedure is repeated from the start, providing a series of identical items.
