The Rotomoulding Process in Detail

1. Mold preparation.
A predetermined measure of polymer in grain form is packed into a hollow mould. The mold is usually made of cast aluminium or sheet steel component. The coloring needed for the finished goods is pre compounded into the polymer. The most generally used powder resin is polythene, but polyvinyl chloride and nylon can also be used in this format of plastic assembly.

Pre-heating of the oven starts, and it can be done by either conduction, convection or sometimes radiation. It is heated to temperatures between 500-700F. The mould with the powdered polymer is then secured and placed inside the oven.

2. The heat and fusion process.
Once within the oven, the mold is turned on two axis so the powdered polymer melts from the heat and layers the inside if the mould. The rotation is done slowly and gradually, about 20 revolutions per minute. One thing that is critical at this point is the period of time the mould will spend within the oven. If it stays to long, the material will lose stability and durability, making a faulty product. If it is removed from the oven too early, the polymer will not have liquefied correctly, which develops bubbles in the finished product line.

3. Mold cooling down.
When the material has completely spent the right amount of time in the oven, it is then removed for cooling. This can be done by air or water, or sometimes a mixture of both which generates a cool mist. When the material cools, it shrinks somewhat for ease of removal from the mould. This is one more measure that relies a lot on the correct timing, since quick cooling shrinks the material too fast, causing bending of the product.

4. The un-loading or de-moulding step.
Once the product within te mold has cooled successfully, the person taking care of the procedure can then extract the completed product from the mold. The procedure is repeated from the beginning, providing a series of similar items.
