The Rotomolding Procedure in Detail

1. Mold fitting.

Pre-heating of the oven starts, and it can be done by either conduction, convection or sometimes radiation. It is warmed to temperatures between 500-700F. The mould with the powdered polymer is then locked and inserted into the oven.

2. The heating and fusion process.
Once inside the oven, the mold is revolved on two axis so the powdered polymer liquefies from the heat and coats the inside if the mould. The turning is done gradually, about 20 rotations per minute. Something that is essential at this point is the period of time the mould will spend inside the oven. If it stays to long, the product will lose stability and durability, making a poor item. If it is extracted from the oven too early, the polymer will not have flowed correctly, which produces bubbles in the completed item.

3. Mold cooling down.
When the material has completely spent the enough of time in the oven, it is then extracted for cooling. This may be done by air or water, or sometimes a mixture of both which a cool mist. When the material cools, it shrinks a little for ease of removal from the mould. This is another procedure that depends a lot on the ideal timing, since quick cooling reduces the material too rapidly, causing warping of the item.

4. The discharging or de-moulding step.
When the component inside te mould has cooled correctly, the molder managing the operation can then extract the finished item from the mould. The procedure is repeated from the start, supplying a series of identical products.
