The Rotomoulding Method in Detail

1. Mould prep work.
A predetermined quantity of polymer in particle form is filled into a hollow mold. The mold is usually composeded of cast aluminium or sheet steel component. The most generally used powder resin is polythene, but polyvinyl chloride and nylon can also be used in this design of plastic engineering.

Pre-heating of the oven starts, and it can be done by either conduction, convection or sometimes radiation. It is heated to temperatures between 500-700F. The mold with the powdered polymer is then locked and inserted within the oven.

2. The heating up and fusion procedure.
Once placed into the oven, the mould is turned on two axis so the powdered polymer liquefies from the heat and overlays the inside if the mold. The rotation is done gradually, about 20 revolutions per min. One thing that is crucial at this point is the period of time the mold will spend inside the oven. If it stays to long, the material will lose stability and durability, generating a poor item. If it is extracted from the oven prematurely, the polymer will not have melted properly, which develops bubbles in the completed product line.

3. Mold cooling down.
When the material has completely spent the enough of time in the oven, it is then taken out for cooling. This can be done by air or water, or sometimes a mixture of both which creates a cool mist. When the component cools, it shrinks a little for ease of removal from the mold. This is another step that depends a lot on the right timing, since rapid cooling decreases the material too rapidly, causing warping of the material.

4. The unloading or de-moulding step.
Once the product within te mould has cooled successfully, the molder managing the process can then take out the finalized item from the mould. The procedure is repeated from the beginning, making a number of exact product lines.
