The Rotomoulding Method in Detail

1. Mold fitting.

Preheating of the oven follows, and it may be done by either conduction, convection or sometimes radiation. It is warmed to temperatures between 500-700F. The mold with the powdered polymer is then locked and inserted into the oven.

2. The heating up and fusion step.
Once within the oven, the mould is turned on two axis so the powdered polymer melts from the heat and coats the inside if the mold. The spinning is done slowly, about 20 revolutions per minute. The main thing that is important at this moment is the period of time the mold will spend inside the oven. If it stays to long, the product will lose stability and durability, creating a weak item. If it is taken out from the oven prematurely, the polymer will not have liquefied properly, which creates bubbles in the completed item.

3. Mold cooling down.
When the component has completely spent the correct amount of time in the oven, it is then taken out for cooling. This can be done by air or water, or sometimes a mixture of both which generates a cool mist. When the material cools, it reduces slightly for ease of removal from the mould. This is yet another step that depends upon a lot on the ideal timing, since quick cooling decreases the material too quickly, causing warping of the product.

4. The offloading or de-molding phase.
When the product inside te mould has cooled properly, the person handling the procedure can then remove the finished item from the mould. The technique is repeated from the beginning, supplying a series of similar product lines.
