1. Mould prep work.
A predetermined measure of polymer in grain form is loaded into a hollow mould. The mold is usually comprised of cast aluminium or sheet steel material. Pre-heating of the oven follows, and it may be done by either conduction, convection or sometimes radiation. It is heated up to temperatures between 500-700F. The mould with the powdered polymer is then sealed and placed into the oven.
2. The heating and fusion phase.
Once within the oven, the mold is revolved on two axis so the powdered polymer liquefies from the heat and coats the inside if the mold. The rotation is done gradually, about 20 rotations per min. The main thing that is critical at this moment is the period of time the mould will spend inside the oven. If it overstays, the product will lose stability and durability, creating a poor item. If it is removed from the oven too early, the polymer will not have melted properly, which develops bubbles in the finished product line.
3. Mould cooling.
When the material has completely spent the right amount of time in the oven, it is then removed for cooling. This may be done by air or water, or sometimes a mixture of both which generates a cool mist. When the component cools, it reduces a little for ease of extraction from the mould. This is another measure that depends upon a lot on the correct timing, since rapid cooling reduces the material too quickly, causing warping of the material.
4. The removing or de-molding phase.
As soon as the component inside te mould has cooled properly, the person taking care of the process can then remove the completed item from the mould. The function is repeated from the start, making a number of similar product lines.
