The Rotomolding Process Components

1. Mould fitting.
A predetermined quantity of polymer in powder form is filled into a hollow mould. The mold is usually constructed from cast aluminium or sheet steel component. The colour chosen for the end product is pre compounded into the polymer. The most commonly used powder resin is polythene, but polyvinyl chloride and nylon can also be used in this type of plastic assembly.

Pre-heating of the oven starts, and it can be done by either conduction, convection or sometimes radiation. It is heated up to temperatures between 500-700F. The mould with the powdered polymer is then locked and installed inside the oven.

2. The heating and fusion phase.
Once inside the oven, the mold is turned on two axis so the powdered polymer melts from the heat and overlays the inside if the mould. The rotation is done gradually, about 20 rotations per min. One thing that is important at this point is the period of time the mold will spend within the oven. If it overstays, the material will lose value and strength, producing a weak product. If it is extracted from the oven too early, the polymer will not have melted correctly, which produces bubbles in the completed product.

3. Mould cooling.
When the product has sufficiently spent the enough of time in the oven, it is then extracted for cooling. This can be done by air or water, or sometimes a mixture of both which generates a cool mist. When the product cools, it shrinks a little for ease of removal from the mold. This is one more measure that relies a lot on the ideal timing, since quick cooling reduces the material too quick, causing warping of the product.

4. The offloading or de-molding phase.
Once the product inside te mold has cooled adequately, the molder managing the operation can then extract the completed item from the mould. The process is repeated from the beginning, providing a series of exact items.
