The Rotomoulding Procedure in Detail

1. Mould readying.
A predetermined measure of polymer in particle form is loaded into a hollow mould. The mold is usually constructed from cast aluminium or sheet steel component. The color wanted for the end item is pre compounded into the polymer. The most generally used powder resin is polythene, but polyvinyl chloride and nylon can also be used in this type of plastic assembly.
Pre-heating of the oven follows, and it can be done by either conduction, convection or sometimes radiation. It is warmed to temperatures between 500-700F. The mold with the powdered polymer is then sealed and installed into the oven.
2. The heating and fusion step.
Once within the oven, the mould is rotated on two axis so the powdered polymer melts from the heat and layers the inside if the mould. The spinning is done slowly, about 20 rotations per minute. Something that is critical at this moment is the amount of time the mould will spend within the oven. If it stays to long, the material will lose stability and durability, making a faulty product. If it is removed from the oven prematurely, the polymer will not have liquefied properly, which develops bubbles in the finalized product.
3. Mould cooling.
When the component has sufficiently spent the correct amount of time in the oven, it is then removed for cooling. This can be done by air or water, or sometimes a mixture of both which a cool mist. When the component cools, it reduces a little for ease of extraction from the mold. This is yet another procedure that depends upon a lot on the correct timing, since quick cooling shrinks the material too rapidly, causing bending of the product.
4. The un-loading or de-molding step.
As soon as the material within te mould has cooled adequately, the molder handling the process can then take out the finished item from the mold. The procedure is repeated from the start, supplying a series of identical product lines.
