The Rotomolding Procedure in Detail

1. Mold readying.
A fixed volume of polymer in particle form is packed into a hollow mould. The mould is usually made of cast aluminium or sheet steel substance. The most often used powder resin is polythene, but polyvinyl chloride and nylon can also be used in this type of plastic engineering.

Preheating of the oven follows, and it can be done by either conduction, convection or sometimes radiation. It is warmed to temperatures between 500-700F. The mold with the powdered polymer is then locked and put into the oven.

2. The heat and fusion procedure.
Once within the oven, the mould is rotated on two axis so the powdered polymer melts from the heat and overlays the inside if the mold. The turning is done slowly and gradually, about 20 rotations per minute. One thing that is essential at this moment is the period of time the mold will spend inside the oven. If it overstays, the product will lose value and durability, generating a weak product. If it is taken out from the oven prematurely, the polymer will not have melted correctly, which develops bubbles in the finished product line.

3. Mold cooling.
When the component has sufficiently spent the right amount of time in the oven, it is then extracted for cooling. This can be done by air or water, or sometimes a mixture of both which creates a cool mist. When the component cools, it reduces slightly for ease of removal from the mold. This is another procedure that relies a lot on the ideal timing, since quick cooling reduces the material too quick, causing bending of the item.

4. The discharging or de-molding step.
As soon as the component within te mold has cooled properly, the person taking care of the procedure can then remove the finished item from the mold. The function is repeated from the start, providing a number of similar product lines.
