The Rotomoulding Method in Detail

1. Mold fitting.
A fixed amount of polymer in powder form is packed into a hollow mould. The mold is usually crafted from cast aluminium or sheet steel material. The coloration desired for the end item is pre compounded into the polymer. The most often used powder resin is polythene, but polyvinyl chloride and nylon can also be used in this format of plastic manufacturing.

Preheating of the oven starts, and it may be done by either conduction, convection or sometimes radiation. It is heated to temperatures between 500-700F. The mould with the powdered polymer is then secured and placed inside the oven.

2. The heat and fusion process.
Once inside the oven, the mold is turned on two axis so the powdered polymer melts from the heat and coats the inside if the mold. The turning is done gradually, about 20 spins per minute. The main thing that is critical at this moment is the amount of time the mold will spend within the oven. If it stays to long, the component will lose stability and durability, creating a weak item. If it is extracted from the oven prematurely, the polymer will not have flowed correctly, which creates bubbles in the finalized product line.

3. Mould cooling down.
When the product has completely spent the right amount of time in the oven, it is then taken out for cooling. This can be done by air or water, or sometimes a mixture of both which creates a cool mist. When the component cools, it shrinks slightly for ease of removal from the mould. This is an additional step that depends upon a lot on the right timing, since quick cooling reduces the material too fast, causing bending of the material.

4. The discharging or de-molding phase.
When the component inside te mold has cooled successfully, the molder handling the procedure can then take out the finalized item from the mold. The function is repeated from the start, making a series of similar items.
