The Rotomolding Procedure in Detail

This molding system has been used since ancient times for creatingvseverl product lines. Egyptians for instance, employed roto-molding systems in the producing of ceramics. 1. Mould fitting.
A fixed quantity of polymer in grain form is loaded into a hollow mould. The mold is usually built from cast aluminium or sheet steel component. The colour wanted for the finished goods is pre compounded into the polymer. The most often used powder resin is polythene, but polyvinyl chloride and nylon can also be used in this design of plastic production.

Pre-heating of the oven follows, and it can be done by either conduction, convection or sometimes radiation. It is warmed to temperatures between 500-700F. The mold with the powdered polymer is then sealed and installed within the oven.

2. The heating and fusion process.
Once within the oven, the mould is rotated on two axis so the powdered polymer liquefies from the heat and overlays the inside if the mold. The rotation is done slowly, about 20 revolutions per minute. The main thing that is important at this moment is the period of time the mold will spend within the oven. If it overstays, the material will lose value and strength, generating a poor item. If it is removed from the oven prematurely, the polymer will not have liquefied properly, which produces bubbles in the finalized product line.

3. Mould cooling.
When the component has sufficiently spent the right amount of time in the oven, it is then extracted for cooling. This may be done by air or water, or sometimes a mixture of both which generates a cool mist. When the product cools, it shrinks slightly for ease of removal from the mold. This is one more measure that depends upon a lot on the correct timing, since rapid cooling shrinks the material too quickly, causing warping of the product.

4. The unloading or de-molding step.
As soon as the product inside te mould has cooled effectively, the person handling the procedure can then remove the finalized product from the mould. The function is repeated from the beginning, making a number of identical product lines.
