The Roto-Molding Method in Detail

This molding procedure has been used since early times for creatingvseverl product lines. Egyptians for example, utilized rotational molding procedures in the making of ceramics. The Swiss were also working with this rotation design to create hollow chocolate eggs. Some plastic product lines in the USA were created utilizing this approach some time between 1940 and 1950. The technique has however taken very long to catch on because it was considered to be a very slow process

1. Mould prep work.
A fixed measure of polymer in powder form is loaded into a hollow mold. The mould is usually composeded of cast aluminium or sheet steel substance. The color tone preferred for the final goods is pre compounded into the polymer. The most commonly used powder resin is polythene, but polyvinyl chloride and nylon can also be used in this style of plastic assembly.

Preheating of the oven follows, and it can be done by either conduction, convection or sometimes radiation. It is heated to temperatures between 500-700F. The mold with the powdered polymer is then sealed and positioned into the oven.

2. The heating and fusion phase.
Once placed into the oven, the mold is revolved on two axis so the powdered polymer liquefies from the heat and layers the inside if the mould. The rotation is done slowly and gradually, about 20 spins per min. Something that is vital at this point is the period of time the mold will spend inside the oven. If it overstays, the component will lose stability and durability, generating a faulty item. If it is taken out from the oven prematurely, the polymer will not have flowed correctly, which develops bubbles in the completed product line.

3. Mould cooling.
When the component has sufficiently spent the right amount of time in the oven, it is then removed for cooling. This may be done by air or water, or sometimes a mixture of both which generates a cool mist. When the component cools, it shrinks slightly for ease of extraction from the mold. This is another procedure that depends a lot on the right timing, since rapid cooling reduces the material too rapidly, causing bending of the material.

4. The un-loading or de-molding phase.
Once the material within te mold has cooled adequately, the molder handling the procedure can then extract the finished item from the mold. The procedure is repeated from the start, supplying a series of similar products.
