The Rotomoulding Process in Detail

This moulding procedure has been used since ancient times for creatingvseverl products. Egyptians as an example, used rotational molding techniques in the making of ceramics. The Swiss were also working with this rotation type to make hollow chocolate eggs. Some plastic product lines in the USA were made utilizing this method some time between 1940 and 1950. Considering that it was regarded to be a basically slow approach, the process has however taken long to catch on

1. Mould fitting.
A fixed volume of polymer in powder form is loaded into a hollow mould. The mold is usually constructed from cast aluminium or sheet steel substance. The coloring needed for the final goods is pre compounded into the polymer. The most generally used powder resin is polythene, but polyvinyl chloride and nylon can also be used in this design of plastic manufacturing.

Pre-heating of the oven follows, and it can be done by either conduction, convection or sometimes radiation. It is heated up to temperatures between 500-700F. The mould with the powdered polymer is then sealed and placed inside the oven.

2. The heating up and fusion procedure.
Once placed into the oven, the mold is rotated on two axis so the powdered polymer liquefies from the heat and layers the inside if the mould. The turning is done gradually, about 20 revolutions per sixty seconds. The main thing that is vital at this moment is the amount of time the mold will spend inside the oven. If it overstays, the component will lose value and durability, producing a weak product. If it is extracted from the oven too early, the polymer will not have melted properly, which generates bubbles in the finished item.

3. Mold cooling.
When the component has completely spent the right amount of time in the oven, it is then taken out for cooling. This may be done by air or water, or sometimes a mixture of both which creates a cool mist. When the component cools, it reduces a little for ease of extraction from the mold. This is another measure that relies a lot on the correct timing, since quick cooling decreases the material too quick, causing bending of the material.

4. The offloading or de-moulding phase.
As soon as the material within te mold has cooled properly, the molder managing the operation can then extract the completed product from the mold. The procedure is repeated from the beginning, supplying a series of identical items.
