The Rotomolding Process in Detail

1. Mould readying.
A fixed amount of polymer in grain form is packed into a hollow mould. The mold is usually made of cast aluminium or sheet steel substance. The coloring needed for the end item is pre compounded into the polymer. The most commonly used powder resin is polythene, but polyvinyl chloride and nylon can also be used in this design of plastic production.

Preheating of the oven follows, and it may be done by either conduction, convection or sometimes radiation. It is heated to temperatures between 500-700F. The mold with the powdered polymer is then sealed and placed within the oven.

2. The heating and fusion phase.
Once within the oven, the mould is rotated on two axis so the powdered polymer liquefies from the heat and coats the inside if the mold. The turning is done slowly and gradually, about 20 rotations per minute. One thing that is essential at this moment is the amount of time the mold will spend inside the oven. If it stays to long, the product will lose value and strength, producing a weak item. If it is taken out from the oven too early, the polymer will not have flowed correctly, which produces bubbles in the finalized item.

3. Mold cooling down.
When the material has sufficiently spent the right amount of time in the oven, it is then taken out for cooling. This may be done by air or water, or sometimes a mixture of both which a cool mist. When the component cools, it shrinks somewhat for ease of extraction from the mold. This is yet another measure that depends a lot on the ideal timing, since quick cooling decreases the material too quick, causing bending of the product.

4. The removing or de-moulding step.
Once the component within te mold has cooled correctly, the person taking care of the operation can then take out the finished product from the mold. The technique is repeated from the beginning, giving a series of exact products.
