The Roto-Molding Process in Detail

This molding procedure has been used since ancient times for creatingvseverl products. Egyptians as an example, applied rotational molding techniques in the of ceramics. The Swiss were also working with this rotation technique to generate hollow chocolate eggs. Some plastic product lines in the USA were created using this technique some time between 1940 and 1950. The technique has however taken very long to catch on because it was thought of to be a rather slow-moving process

1. Mould fitting.
A predetermined quantity of polymer in powder form is packed into a hollow mold. The mold is usually built from cast aluminium or sheet steel material. The coloring desired for the end item is pre compounded into the polymer. The most generally used powder resin is polythene, but polyvinyl chloride and nylon can also be used in this format of plastic manufacturing.

Preheating of the oven follows, and it can be done by either conduction, convection or sometimes radiation. It is heated to temperatures between 500-700F. The mould with the powdered polymer is then sealed and installed inside the oven.

2. The heating and fusion process.
Once placed into the oven, the mold is revolved on two axis so the powdered polymer liquefies from the heat and layers the inside if the mould. The rotation is done slowly and gradually, about 20 spins per minute. One thing that is important at this moment is the period of time the mold will spend inside the oven. If it stays to long, the material will lose stability and durability, producing a poor item. If it is taken out from the oven too early, the polymer will not have flowed properly, which produces bubbles in the finalized product line.

3. Mold cooling.
When the product has sufficiently spent the enough of time in the oven, it is then extracted for cooling. This may be done by air or water, or sometimes a mixture of both which generates a cool mist. When the product cools, it shrinks a little for ease of removal from the mold. This is an additional step that depends a lot on the right timing, since rapid cooling decreases the material too quickly, causing warping of the product.

4. The un-loading or de-moulding phase.
As soon as the product inside te mould has cooled adequately, the molder taking care of the operation can then take out the finished product from the mould. The process is repeated from the start, making a series of identical product lines.
