The Roto-Molding Procedure Components

1. Mould prep work.
A fixed volume of polymer in grain form is packed into a hollow mold. The mold is usually constructed from cast aluminium or sheet steel component. The color tone wanted for the final goods is pre compounded into the polymer. The most commonly used powder resin is polythene, but polyvinyl chloride and nylon can also be used in this design of plastic manufacturing.

Preheating of the oven follows, and it can be done by either conduction, convection or sometimes radiation. It is warmed to temperatures between 500-700F. The mold with the powdered polymer is then secured and placed inside the oven.

2. The heat and fusion step.
Once inside the oven, the mold is revolved on two axis so the powdered polymer liquefies from the heat and layers the inside if the mould. The turning is done slowly and gradually, about 20 rotations per minute. Something that is critical at this point is the period of time the mould will spend within the oven. If it overstays, the product will lose value and strength, producing a faulty product. If it is extracted from the oven prematurely, the polymer will not have liquefied properly, which generates bubbles in the finalized product line.

3. Mould cooling down.
When the material has sufficiently spent the correct amount of time in the oven, it is then taken out for cooling. This may be done by air or water, or sometimes a mixture of both which generates a cool mist. When the component cools, it shrinks somewhat for ease of extraction from the mould. This is another step that depends a lot on the correct timing, since quick cooling reduces the material too rapidly, causing bending of the material.

4. The offloading or de-moulding step.
As soon as the product inside te mould has cooled properly, the person taking care of the operation can then take out the finished product from the mold. The function is repeated from the start, supplying a number of similar products.
