The Rotomoulding Process in Detail

1. Mould preparation.
A predetermined quantity of polymer in particle form is packed into a hollow mould. The mold is usually built from cast aluminium or sheet steel component. The coloration chosen for the final goods is pre compounded into the polymer. The most typically used powder resin is polythene, but polyvinyl chloride and nylon can also be used in this type of plastic production.

Preheating of the oven starts, and it can be done by either conduction, convection or sometimes radiation. It is warmed to temperatures between 500-700F. The mould with the powdered polymer is then locked and installed within the oven.

2. The heating and fusion procedure.
Once within the oven, the mold is revolved on two axis so the powdered polymer melts from the heat and layers the inside if the mould. The spinning is done slowly, about 20 rotations per sixty seconds. One thing that is essential at this moment is the period of time the mould will spend inside the oven. If it overstays, the component will lose value and strength, producing a faulty item. If it is removed from the oven prematurely, the polymer will not have liquefied properly, which creates bubbles in the finished product line.

3. Mould cooling down.
When the component has sufficiently spent the correct amount of time in the oven, it is then extracted for cooling. This can be done by air or water, or sometimes a mixture of both which generates a cool mist. When the product cools, it reduces a little for ease of removal from the mould. This is another measure that depends a lot on the right timing, since rapid cooling decreases the material too rapidly, causing warping of the product.

4. The un-loading or de-moulding step.
Once the material inside te mold has cooled effectively, the person taking care of the process can then remove the completed product from the mold. The function is repeated from the start, providing a number of identical product lines.
