The Rotomolding Method Components

1. Mould prep work.
A predetermined volume of polymer in grain form is loaded into a hollow mould. The mold is usually constructed from cast aluminium or sheet steel material. The most commonly used powder resin is polythene, but polyvinyl chloride and nylon can also be used in this type of plastic manufacturing.

Preheating of the oven follows, and it can be done by either conduction, convection or sometimes radiation. It is heated up to temperatures between 500-700F. The mould with the powdered polymer is then secured and positioned into the oven.

2. The heating up and fusion process.
Once inside the oven, the mould is turned on two axis so the powdered polymer melts from the heat and coats the inside if the mold. The turning is done slowly and gradually, about 20 revolutions per min. One thing that is critical at this moment is the amount of time the mold will spend within the oven. If it overstays, the material will lose value and durability, making a faulty product. If it is removed from the oven too early, the polymer will not have flowed correctly, which produces bubbles in the finalized product line.

3. Mold cooling.
When the component has completely spent the correct amount of time in the oven, it is then extracted for cooling. This can be done by air or water, or sometimes a mixture of both which generates a cool mist. When the component cools, it reduces a little for ease of removal from the mold. This is one more procedure that relies a lot on the right timing, since rapid cooling shrinks the material too quick, causing bending of the product.

4. The discharging or de-moulding phase.
As soon as the product within te mold has cooled successfully, the person handling the procedure can then take out the finished product from the mold. The technique is repeated from the start, supplying a number of identical product lines.
