The Rotomolding Process in Detail

1. Mold prep work.
A fixed amount of polymer in powder form is filled into a hollow mould. The mold is usually composeded of cast aluminium or sheet steel material. The color tone needed for the end product is pre compounded into the polymer. The most commonly used powder resin is polythene, but polyvinyl chloride and nylon can also be used in this design of plastic engineering.

Pre-heating of the oven follows, and it may be done by either conduction, convection or sometimes radiation. It is heated to temperatures between 500-700F. The mould with the powdered polymer is then locked and positioned into the oven.

2. The heating and fusion step.
Once placed into the oven, the mould is rotated on two axis so the powdered polymer liquefies from the heat and overlays the inside if the mold. The turning is done gradually, about 20 rotations per min. The main thing that is important at this point is the amount of time the mould will spend inside the oven. If it overstays, the component will lose value and durability, producing a poor item. If it is taken out from the oven too early, the polymer will not have flowed correctly, which produces bubbles in the completed product line.

3. Mould cooling.
When the material has completely spent the correct amount of time in the oven, it is then taken out for cooling. This may be done by air or water, or sometimes a mixture of both which generates a cool mist. When the component cools, it reduces slightly for ease of extraction from the mould. This is one more step that relies a lot on the right timing, since quick cooling decreases the material too quick, causing bending of the item.

4. The offloading or de-molding step.
Once the product inside te mold has cooled adequately, the person taking care of the procedure can then take out the finalized product from the mold. The technique is repeated from the beginning, making a number of identical items.
