The Roto-Molding Process Components

This moulding technique has been used since early times for creatingvseverl items. Egyptians for instance, employed roto-molding solutions in the creating of ceramics. The procedure has however taken very long to catch on because it was thought of to be a very slow process

1. Mold readying.
A fixed quantity of polymer in particle form is filled into a hollow mould. The mould is usually comprised of cast aluminium or sheet steel material. The coloring intended for the final goods is pre compounded into the polymer. The most typically used powder resin is polythene, but polyvinyl chloride and nylon can also be used in this style of plastic manufacturing.

Preheating of the oven follows, and it can be done by either conduction, convection or sometimes radiation. It is heated to temperatures between 500-700F. The mould with the powdered polymer is then secured and placed inside the oven.

2. The heating up and fusion phase.
Once inside the oven, the mould is revolved on two axis so the powdered polymer liquefies from the heat and overlays the inside if the mold. The spinning is done gradually, about 20 spins per sixty seconds. The main thing that is critical at this moment is the period of time the mold will spend within the oven. If it stays to long, the material will lose stability and durability, producing a poor product. If it is taken out from the oven too early, the polymer will not have flowed properly, which develops bubbles in the finalized product line.

3. Mold cooling down.
When the component has sufficiently spent the right amount of time in the oven, it is then taken out for cooling. This may be done by air or water, or sometimes a mixture of both which a cool mist. When the product cools, it shrinks a little for ease of removal from the mould. This is another procedure that relies a lot on the right timing, since quick cooling reduces the material too rapidly, causing warping of the product.

4. The unloading or de-molding phase.
When the component within te mould has cooled properly, the molder handling the operation can then extract the completed product from the mold. The process is repeated from the start, giving a series of exact products.
