The Rotomoulding Process in Detail

This molding system has been used since earlier times for creatingvseverl items. Egyptians for instance, applied rotomoulding solutions in the creating of ceramics. The Swiss were also employing this rotation design to create hollow chocolate eggs. Some plastic product lines in the USA were made using this method some time between 1940 and 1950. The technique has however taken very long to take affect because it was thought of as being a very slow process

1. Mould fitting.
A fixed measure of polymer in grain form is filled into a hollow mould. The mold is usually crafted from cast aluminium or sheet steel material. The coloring chosen for the finished item is pre compounded into the polymer. The most generally used powder resin is polythene, but polyvinyl chloride and nylon can also be used in this design of plastic assembly.

Pre-heating of the oven follows, and it may be done by either conduction, convection or sometimes radiation. It is heated up to temperatures between 500-700F. The mold with the powdered polymer is then secured and put into the oven.

2. The heating and fusion process.
Once placed into the oven, the mould is rotated on two axis so the powdered polymer liquefies from the heat and layers the inside if the mold. The turning is done gradually, about 20 revolutions per sixty seconds. One thing that is essential at this point is the amount of time the mould will spend within the oven. If it overstays, the product will lose value and strength, producing a weak product. If it is extracted from the oven too early, the polymer will not have liquefied properly, which generates bubbles in the finalized product line.

3. Mold cooling.
When the component has sufficiently spent the right amount of time in the oven, it is then removed for cooling. This can be done by air or water, or sometimes a mixture of both which creates a cool mist. When the component cools, it shrinks slightly for ease of extraction from the mould. This is one more measure that relies a lot on the correct timing, since rapid cooling reduces the material too fast, causing bending of the product.

4. The offloading or de-moulding step.
Once the component within te mold has cooled properly, the person managing the process can then remove the finalized product from the mold. The function is repeated from the start, making a series of similar products.
