The Rotomolding Procedure in Detail

This molding operation has been used since earlier times for creatingvseverl products. Egyptians for instance, utilized rotational molding methods in the making of ceramics. The process has however taken long to catch on because it was considered to be a relatively slow process

1. Mould prep work.
A fixed measure of polymer in particle form is loaded into a hollow mould. The mould is usually made from cast aluminium or sheet steel substance. The coloration wanted for the end goods is pre compounded into the polymer. The most often used powder resin is polythene, but polyvinyl chloride and nylon can also be used in this design of plastic assembly.

Preheating of the oven follows, and it can be done by either conduction, convection or sometimes radiation. It is heated to temperatures between 500-700F. The mold with the powdered polymer is then locked and installed into the oven.

2. The heating and fusion step.
Once inside the oven, the mould is revolved on two axis so the powdered polymer melts from the heat and coats the inside if the mold. The spinning is done slowly and gradually, about 20 revolutions per minute. Something that is critical at this moment is the period of time the mold will spend within the oven. If it stays to long, the material will lose value and strength, generating a poor item. If it is taken out from the oven too early, the polymer will not have flowed correctly, which produces bubbles in the finished product.

3. Mold cooling.
When the component has completely spent the correct amount of time in the oven, it is then extracted for cooling. This can be done by air or water, or sometimes a mixture of both which generates a cool mist. When the component cools, it reduces a little for ease of removal from the mould. This is an additional measure that depends upon a lot on the ideal timing, since rapid cooling shrinks the material too quickly, causing bending of the material.

4. The unloading or de-moulding step.
As soon as the product within te mold has cooled properly, the person taking care of the procedure can then take out the finished product from the mold. The function is repeated from the beginning, providing a series of similar items.
