The Rotomoulding Process Components

1. Mould preparation.
A predetermined volume of polymer in powder form is loaded into a hollow mold. The mould is usually composeded of cast aluminium or sheet steel material. The most commonly used powder resin is polythene, but polyvinyl chloride and nylon can also be used in this design of plastic assembly.

Pre-heating of the oven starts, and it can be done by either conduction, convection or sometimes radiation. It is heated up to temperatures between 500-700F. The mould with the powdered polymer is then sealed and installed within the oven.

2. The heating up and fusion process.
Once inside the oven, the mould is turned on two axis so the powdered polymer liquefies from the heat and coats the inside if the mould. The rotation is done gradually, about 20 revolutions per min. One thing that is important at this moment is the amount of time the mold will spend inside the oven. If it stays to long, the component will lose stability and durability, producing a poor product. If it is extracted from the oven too early, the polymer will not have flowed correctly, which produces bubbles in the completed product.

3. Mold cooling.
When the component has sufficiently spent the enough of time in the oven, it is then removed for cooling. This may be done by air or water, or sometimes a mixture of both which creates a cool mist. When the material cools, it reduces somewhat for ease of removal from the mould. This is an additional procedure that depends upon a lot on the correct timing, since quick cooling shrinks the material too fast, causing bending of the product.

4. The offloading or de-molding step.
Once the product within te mould has cooled properly, the molder handling the process can then remove the completed item from the mold. The process is repeated from the start, making a number of exact items.
