The Rotomoulding Procedure in Detail

This molding process has been used since ancient times for creatingvseverl products. Egyptians for instance, applied rotational molding methods in the creating of ceramics. The technique has however taken long to catch on because it was looked at as being a somewhat slow process

1. Mould prep work.
A fixed measure of polymer in particle form is loaded into a hollow mould. The mold is usually comprised of cast aluminium or sheet steel material. The color tone chosen for the end product is pre compounded into the polymer. The most commonly used powder resin is polythene, but polyvinyl chloride and nylon can also be used in this style of plastic assembly.

Pre-heating of the oven starts, and it can be done by either conduction, convection or sometimes radiation. It is heated to temperatures between 500-700F. The mould with the powdered polymer is then secured and inserted inside the oven.

2. The heat and fusion process.
Once inside the oven, the mold is revolved on two axis so the powdered polymer liquefies from the heat and overlays the inside if the mould. The spinning is done slowly and gradually, about 20 spins per sixty seconds. The main thing that is essential at this moment is the amount of time the mould will spend inside the oven. If it stays to long, the material will lose value and durability, creating a poor product. If it is taken out from the oven too early, the polymer will not have liquefied correctly, which produces bubbles in the finished item.

3. Mould cooling down.
When the material has sufficiently spent the enough of time in the oven, it is then removed for cooling. This may be done by air or water, or sometimes a mixture of both which creates a cool mist. When the product cools, it shrinks somewhat for ease of extraction from the mould. This is yet another measure that relies a lot on the right timing, since rapid cooling shrinks the material too fast, causing bending of the material.

4. The un-loading or de-molding step.
When the component within te mold has cooled properly, the person handling the operation can then extract the completed product from the mould. The process is repeated from the start, making a series of identical product lines.
