The Rotomoulding Process in Detail

This molding technique has been used since earlier times for creatingvseverl products. Egyptians for instance, utilized rotomoulding techniques in the making of ceramics. 1. Mould preparation.
A predetermined measure of polymer in particle form is packed into a hollow mold. The mold is usually constructed from cast aluminium or sheet steel material. The colour intended for the finished item is pre compounded into the polymer. The most often used powder resin is polythene, but polyvinyl chloride and nylon can also be used in this format of plastic engineering.

Pre-heating of the oven starts, and it can be done by either conduction, convection or sometimes radiation. It is heated to temperatures between 500-700F. The mould with the powdered polymer is then secured and put into the oven.

2. The heating and fusion process.
Once placed into the oven, the mould is rotated on two axis so the powdered polymer liquefies from the heat and layers the inside if the mold. The rotation is done gradually, about 20 rotations per min. One thing that is vital at this moment is the amount of time the mold will spend inside the oven. If it stays to long, the material will lose value and durability, producing a weak product. If it is removed from the oven too early, the polymer will not have flowed correctly, which develops bubbles in the finalized product.

3. Mold cooling.
When the material has sufficiently spent the enough of time in the oven, it is then extracted for cooling. This can be done by air or water, or sometimes a mixture of both which a cool mist. When the component cools, it reduces a little for ease of removal from the mold. This is another step that depends a lot on the correct timing, since quick cooling shrinks the material too rapidly, causing warping of the item.

4. The offloading or de-molding step.
When the product within te mold has cooled successfully, the molder taking care of the procedure can then extract the finished item from the mould. The technique is repeated from the start, providing a series of exact products.
