The Rotomolding Procedure in Detail

1. Mold prep work.
A fixed amount of polymer in grain form is packed into a hollow mould. The mould is usually comprised of cast aluminium or sheet steel material. The colour needed for the final goods is pre compounded into the polymer. The most often used powder resin is polythene, but polyvinyl chloride and nylon can also be used in this design of plastic manufacturing.

Pre-heating of the oven starts, and it may be done by either conduction, convection or sometimes radiation. It is heated up to temperatures between 500-700F. The mould with the powdered polymer is then secured and inserted inside the oven.

2. The heat and fusion procedure.
Once within the oven, the mould is rotated on two axis so the powdered polymer melts from the heat and overlays the inside if the mould. The spinning is done slowly and gradually, about 20 spins per min. Something that is critical at this point is the amount of time the mould will spend within the oven. If it stays to long, the material will lose value and durability, generating a faulty product. If it is removed from the oven prematurely, the polymer will not have liquefied correctly, which develops bubbles in the finalized product line.

3. Mold cooling down.
When the component has sufficiently spent the right amount of time in the oven, it is then removed for cooling. This can be done by air or water, or sometimes a mixture of both which a cool mist. When the product cools, it reduces a little for ease of removal from the mould. This is one more measure that depends a lot on the correct timing, since rapid cooling decreases the material too quickly, causing bending of the product.

4. The offloading or de-moulding phase.
As soon as the product inside te mold has cooled effectively, the person handling the process can then take out the finished product from the mould. The function is repeated from the beginning, supplying a number of similar products.
