The Rotomoulding Process in Detail

1. Mould fitting.
A fixed amount of polymer in powder form is packed into a hollow mold. The mould is usually made of cast aluminium or sheet steel substance. The most often used powder resin is polythene, but polyvinyl chloride and nylon can also be used in this format of plastic manufacturing.

Pre-heating of the oven starts, and it may be done by either conduction, convection or sometimes radiation. It is heated up to temperatures between 500-700F. The mold with the powdered polymer is then sealed and placed inside the oven.

2. The heat and fusion procedure.
Once inside the oven, the mold is rotated on two axis so the powdered polymer melts from the heat and layers the inside if the mould. The turning is done gradually, about 20 spins per min. One thing that is essential at this moment is the amount of time the mould will spend within the oven. If it overstays, the component will lose stability and durability, producing a weak product. If it is extracted from the oven prematurely, the polymer will not have melted correctly, which develops bubbles in the finalized product line.

3. Mold cooling down.
When the component has completely spent the right amount of time in the oven, it is then taken out for cooling. This may be done by air or water, or sometimes a mixture of both which generates a cool mist. When the product cools, it reduces slightly for ease of extraction from the mould. This is another step that depends upon a lot on the right timing, since quick cooling reduces the material too quick, causing bending of the item.

4. The un-loading or de-moulding step.
As soon as the product inside te mold has cooled adequately, the molder managing the procedure can then extract the completed product from the mold. The function is repeated from the beginning, supplying a number of identical products.
