The Rotomoulding Process in Detail

1. Mould preparation.
A fixed amount of polymer in grain form is loaded into a hollow mould. The mould is usually composeded of cast aluminium or sheet steel component. Preheating of the oven follows, and it can be done by either conduction, convection or sometimes radiation. It is warmed to temperatures between 500-700F. The mould with the powdered polymer is then locked and put inside the oven.

2. The heat and fusion procedure.
Once inside the oven, the mold is turned on two axis so the powdered polymer liquefies from the heat and layers the inside if the mold. The spinning is done slowly and gradually, about 20 spins per min. Something that is vital at this moment is the amount of time the mould will spend inside the oven. If it overstays, the product will lose value and strength, creating a weak item. If it is taken out from the oven prematurely, the polymer will not have liquefied properly, which develops bubbles in the finished item.

3. Mold cooling.
When the product has completely spent the enough of time in the oven, it is then extracted for cooling. This can be done by air or water, or sometimes a mixture of both which a cool mist. When the product cools, it reduces somewhat for ease of extraction from the mold. This is one more step that depends upon a lot on the ideal timing, since rapid cooling decreases the material too rapidly, causing warping of the item.

4. The un-loading or de-moulding phase.
As soon as the component within te mould has cooled properly, the molder managing the procedure can then take out the completed item from the mold. The function is repeated from the beginning, supplying a series of exact items.
