The Rotomoulding Process Components

1. Mould prep work.
A fixed measure of polymer in grain form is packed into a hollow mould. The mold is usually made from cast aluminium or sheet steel component. The coloration needed for the end item is pre compounded into the polymer. The most generally used powder resin is polythene, but polyvinyl chloride and nylon can also be used in this design of plastic engineering.

Pre-heating of the oven follows, and it may be done by either conduction, convection or sometimes radiation. It is warmed to temperatures between 500-700F. The mold with the powdered polymer is then sealed and positioned within the oven.

2. The heating and fusion step.
Once placed into the oven, the mould is spun on two axis so the powdered polymer liquefies from the heat and overlays the inside if the mold. The turning is done gradually, about 20 rotations per min. The main thing that is crucial at this moment is the amount of time the mold will spend within the oven. If it overstays, the component will lose stability and strength, creating a weak product. If it is removed from the oven too early, the polymer will not have liquefied properly, which generates bubbles in the finalized product.

3. Mould cooling.
When the component has completely spent the correct amount of time in the oven, it is then extracted for cooling. This can be done by air or water, or sometimes a mixture of both which creates a cool mist. When the material cools, it shrinks slightly for ease of removal from the mold. This is one more step that depends upon a lot on the ideal timing, since quick cooling shrinks the material too quick, causing warping of the product.

4. The offloading or de-moulding phase.
As soon as the product inside te mold has cooled properly, the molder handling the operation can then remove the finalized item from the mold. The function is repeated from the start, giving a number of similar items.
