The Rotomoulding Process in Detail

1. Mould fitting.
A predetermined volume of polymer in particle form is filled into a hollow mold. The mold is usually built from cast aluminium or sheet steel substance. The most typically used powder resin is polythene, but polyvinyl chloride and nylon can also be used in this design of plastic engineering.

Preheating of the oven starts, and it may be done by either conduction, convection or sometimes radiation. It is heated up to temperatures between 500-700F. The mould with the powdered polymer is then secured and inserted within the oven.

2. The heating and fusion process.
Once within the oven, the mould is spun on two axis so the powdered polymer melts from the heat and coats the inside if the mold. The turning is done gradually, about 20 revolutions per sixty seconds. Something that is important at this moment is the period of time the mould will spend inside the oven. If it stays to long, the component will lose stability and strength, producing a poor item. If it is extracted from the oven too early, the polymer will not have melted correctly, which creates bubbles in the completed product.

3. Mold cooling down.
When the component has completely spent the correct amount of time in the oven, it is then removed for cooling. This may be done by air or water, or sometimes a mixture of both which generates a cool mist. When the material cools, it shrinks a little for ease of removal from the mould. This is an additional measure that depends a lot on the correct timing, since quick cooling shrinks the material too quick, causing bending of the product.

4. The unloading or de-molding phase.
When the material inside te mold has cooled successfully, the person taking care of the process can then extract the finished item from the mold. The process is repeated from the beginning, providing a series of similar products.
