The Rotomolding Process Components

1. Mold readying.
A fixed quantity of polymer in grain form is packed into a hollow mould. The mold is usually made from cast aluminium or sheet steel material. The most typically used powder resin is polythene, but polyvinyl chloride and nylon can also be used in this style of plastic engineering.

Preheating of the oven starts, and it can be done by either conduction, convection or sometimes radiation. It is warmed to temperatures between 500-700F. The mold with the powdered polymer is then sealed and positioned inside the oven.

2. The heating and fusion procedure.
Once placed into the oven, the mold is revolved on two axis so the powdered polymer liquefies from the heat and layers the inside if the mould. The turning is done slowly and gradually, about 20 rotations per min. The main thing that is critical at this moment is the amount of time the mold will spend inside the oven. If it stays to long, the material will lose value and strength, making a poor product. If it is extracted from the oven too early, the polymer will not have melted properly, which develops bubbles in the completed product.

3. Mould cooling down.
When the component has completely spent the correct amount of time in the oven, it is then removed for cooling. This may be done by air or water, or sometimes a mixture of both which creates a cool mist. When the material cools, it shrinks somewhat for ease of removal from the mold. This is yet another measure that depends upon a lot on the right timing, since quick cooling reduces the material too quickly, causing warping of the product.

4. The offloading or de-molding phase.
When the component within te mould has cooled successfully, the molder handling the process can then remove the finished item from the mould. The procedure is repeated from the beginning, making a series of identical items.
