The Rotomolding Procedure in Detail

This molding operation has been used since early times for creatingvseverl products. Egyptians as an example, employed roto-molding procedures in the making of ceramics. 1. Mould preparation.
A fixed amount of polymer in particle form is packed into a hollow mold. The mould is usually made from cast aluminium or sheet steel material. The coloring chosen for the final goods is pre compounded into the polymer. The most commonly used powder resin is polythene, but polyvinyl chloride and nylon can also be used in this type of plastic assembly.

Pre-heating of the oven starts, and it can be done by either conduction, convection or sometimes radiation. It is warmed to temperatures between 500-700F. The mold with the powdered polymer is then secured and inserted inside the oven.

2. The heating up and fusion process.
Once inside the oven, the mould is revolved on two axis so the powdered polymer liquefies from the heat and overlays the inside if the mould. The spinning is done gradually, about 20 revolutions per minute. Something that is important at this moment is the period of time the mould will spend within the oven. If it stays to long, the material will lose stability and durability, making a poor item. If it is extracted from the oven prematurely, the polymer will not have liquefied correctly, which produces bubbles in the finished product.

3. Mould cooling.
When the material has sufficiently spent the correct amount of time in the oven, it is then taken out for cooling. This can be done by air or water, or sometimes a mixture of both which creates a cool mist. When the product cools, it reduces slightly for ease of removal from the mold. This is another procedure that relies a lot on the right timing, since rapid cooling shrinks the material too quickly, causing bending of the material.

4. The removing or de-moulding step.
When the material within te mold has cooled properly, the person taking care of the operation can then take out the finalized item from the mold. The procedure is repeated from the beginning, providing a series of similar items.
