The Rotomoulding Process in Detail

1. Mould fitting.
A predetermined measure of polymer in grain form is packed into a hollow mould. The mould is usually made from cast aluminium or sheet steel component. The most often used powder resin is polythene, but polyvinyl chloride and nylon can also be used in this design of plastic production.

Pre-heating of the oven starts, and it can be done by either conduction, convection or sometimes radiation. It is warmed to temperatures between 500-700F. The mould with the powdered polymer is then locked and installed into the oven.

2. The heating and fusion phase.
Once placed into the oven, the mold is spun on two axis so the powdered polymer liquefies from the heat and layers the inside if the mould. The rotation is done slowly and gradually, about 20 rotations per minute. Something that is vital at this moment is the amount of time the mould will spend inside the oven. If it overstays, the product will lose stability and durability, generating a faulty item. If it is removed from the oven prematurely, the polymer will not have flowed correctly, which creates bubbles in the completed item.

3. Mold cooling down.
When the material has sufficiently spent the enough of time in the oven, it is then removed for cooling. This can be done by air or water, or sometimes a mixture of both which a cool mist. When the material cools, it shrinks slightly for ease of removal from the mould. This is an additional procedure that depends a lot on the right timing, since rapid cooling decreases the material too fast, causing warping of the item.

4. The discharging or de-molding step.
Once the product inside te mold has cooled successfully, the person handling the operation can then remove the finished item from the mold. The technique is repeated from the beginning, making a number of identical products.
