The Roto-Molding Procedure in Detail

This molding system has been used since early times for creatingvseverl items. Egyptians for example, applied rotocasting systems in the producing of ceramics. 1. Mould readying.
A predetermined volume of polymer in powder form is packed into a hollow mould. The mold is usually made from cast aluminium or sheet steel component. The colour chosen for the end goods is pre compounded into the polymer. The most typically used powder resin is polythene, but polyvinyl chloride and nylon can also be used in this style of plastic manufacturing.

Pre-heating of the oven follows, and it may be done by either conduction, convection or sometimes radiation. It is warmed to temperatures between 500-700F. The mold with the powdered polymer is then secured and installed into the oven.

2. The heating and fusion phase.
Once within the oven, the mold is rotated on two axis so the powdered polymer melts from the heat and layers the inside if the mold. The spinning is done gradually, about 20 spins per minute. Something that is critical at this moment is the amount of time the mould will spend inside the oven. If it stays to long, the product will lose stability and durability, producing a faulty item. If it is removed from the oven prematurely, the polymer will not have flowed properly, which generates bubbles in the finalized product.

3. Mould cooling down.
When the component has completely spent the enough of time in the oven, it is then removed for cooling. This can be done by air or water, or sometimes a mixture of both which a cool mist. When the material cools, it shrinks somewhat for ease of removal from the mold. This is another step that depends upon a lot on the right timing, since quick cooling decreases the material too quickly, causing bending of the material.

4. The unloading or de-moulding phase.
Once the material within te mould has cooled effectively, the molder handling the operation can then extract the finalized item from the mould. The function is repeated from the start, supplying a number of similar products.
