The Rotomolding Process Components

This molding system has been used since ancient times for creatingvseverl items. Egyptians for instance, used rotational molding techniques in the manufacturing of ceramics. The Swiss were also making use of this rotation format to generate hollow chocolate eggs. Some plastic product lines in the USA were made using this procedure some time between 1940 and 1950. Because it was viewed to be a very slow procedure, the system has however taken long to catch on

1. Mold fitting.
A predetermined volume of polymer in grain form is filled into a hollow mould. The mold is usually built from cast aluminium or sheet steel material. The color chosen for the final item is pre compounded into the polymer. The most typically used powder resin is polythene, but polyvinyl chloride and nylon can also be used in this style of plastic manufacturing.

Pre-heating of the oven follows, and it can be done by either conduction, convection or sometimes radiation. It is heated to temperatures between 500-700F. The mould with the powdered polymer is then secured and inserted inside the oven.

2. The heating up and fusion phase.
Once within the oven, the mould is spun on two axis so the powdered polymer liquefies from the heat and overlays the inside if the mould. The rotation is done gradually, about 20 spins per min. One thing that is critical at this moment is the amount of time the mold will spend within the oven. If it stays to long, the product will lose value and durability, making a poor product. If it is taken out from the oven too early, the polymer will not have melted correctly, which produces bubbles in the finalized product line.

3. Mould cooling.
When the component has sufficiently spent the correct amount of time in the oven, it is then removed for cooling. This can be done by air or water, or sometimes a mixture of both which a cool mist. When the material cools, it reduces somewhat for ease of extraction from the mold. This is one more procedure that relies a lot on the correct timing, since quick cooling decreases the material too rapidly, causing bending of the material.

4. The removing or de-molding phase.
Once the product inside te mould has cooled successfully, the person handling the operation can then take out the finished item from the mold. The function is repeated from the start, supplying a series of exact items.
