The Rotomoulding Process in Detail

1. Mould readying.
A predetermined volume of polymer in particle form is filled into a hollow mould. The mould is usually constructed from cast aluminium or sheet steel substance. The color wanted for the final goods is pre compounded into the polymer. The most commonly used powder resin is polythene, but polyvinyl chloride and nylon can also be used in this style of plastic production.

Preheating of the oven starts, and it may be done by either conduction, convection or sometimes radiation. It is warmed to temperatures between 500-700F. The mold with the powdered polymer is then locked and placed within the oven.

2. The heating and fusion procedure.
Once inside the oven, the mould is rotated on two axis so the powdered polymer liquefies from the heat and layers the inside if the mold. The turning is done gradually, about 20 rotations per minute. Something that is essential at this point is the period of time the mold will spend within the oven. If it overstays, the product will lose value and durability, making a poor item. If it is removed from the oven prematurely, the polymer will not have melted correctly, which creates bubbles in the completed product line.

3. Mould cooling.
When the material has sufficiently spent the correct amount of time in the oven, it is then removed for cooling. This may be done by air or water, or sometimes a mixture of both which creates a cool mist. When the component cools, it reduces slightly for ease of extraction from the mould. This is one more procedure that depends a lot on the correct timing, since rapid cooling shrinks the material too quick, causing warping of the item.

4. The discharging or de-molding step.
Once the material inside te mould has cooled properly, the molder managing the process can then extract the completed product from the mould. The technique is repeated from the beginning, supplying a series of identical items.
