The Rotomoulding Process Components

This molding operation has been used since ancient times for creatingvseverl products. Egyptians for example, worked with roto-molding methods in the making of ceramics. The Swiss were also applying this rotation type to create hollow chocolate eggs. Some plastic items in the USA were manufactured using this method some time between 1940 and 1950. Given that it was considered to be a fairly slow-moving procedure, the method has however taken long to catch on

1. Mould fitting.
A predetermined measure of polymer in grain form is loaded into a hollow mould. The mold is usually composeded of cast aluminium or sheet steel component. The colour chosen for the final goods is pre compounded into the polymer. The most commonly used powder resin is polythene, but polyvinyl chloride and nylon can also be used in this format of plastic engineering.

Pre-heating of the oven starts, and it can be done by either conduction, convection or sometimes radiation. It is heated up to temperatures between 500-700F. The mould with the powdered polymer is then secured and inserted inside the oven.

2. The heating and fusion step.
Once within the oven, the mould is turned on two axis so the powdered polymer liquefies from the heat and coats the inside if the mold. The turning is done gradually, about 20 spins per sixty seconds. Something that is important at this point is the period of time the mold will spend inside the oven. If it overstays, the material will lose value and strength, making a faulty product. If it is extracted from the oven prematurely, the polymer will not have flowed correctly, which creates bubbles in the finalized item.

3. Mold cooling down.
When the product has sufficiently spent the correct amount of time in the oven, it is then extracted for cooling. This can be done by air or water, or sometimes a mixture of both which creates a cool mist. When the product cools, it shrinks a little for ease of extraction from the mold. This is yet another measure that depends upon a lot on the ideal timing, since quick cooling reduces the material too quick, causing bending of the item.

4. The offloading or de-molding phase.
Once the component inside te mould has cooled properly, the person managing the operation can then take out the completed item from the mold. The technique is repeated from the beginning, supplying a number of identical items.
