The Rotomoulding Method in Detail

This molding technique has been used since early times for creatingvseverl products. Egyptians for example, used rotocasting solutions in the producing of ceramics. The system has however taken very long to take affect because it was looked at to be a rather slow-moving process

1. Mould fitting.
A predetermined amount of polymer in powder form is packed into a hollow mould. The mould is usually composeded of cast aluminium or sheet steel material. The coloring desired for the end goods is pre compounded into the polymer. The most commonly used powder resin is polythene, but polyvinyl chloride and nylon can also be used in this format of plastic engineering.

Preheating of the oven starts, and it may be done by either conduction, convection or sometimes radiation. It is heated to temperatures between 500-700F. The mold with the powdered polymer is then locked and inserted into the oven.

2. The heating up and fusion procedure.
Once inside the oven, the mold is rotated on two axis so the powdered polymer liquefies from the heat and overlays the inside if the mould. The spinning is done slowly, about 20 revolutions per minute. One thing that is essential at this point is the amount of time the mold will spend inside the oven. If it overstays, the material will lose stability and durability, producing a faulty item. If it is extracted from the oven prematurely, the polymer will not have flowed correctly, which develops bubbles in the finalized product.

3. Mold cooling down.
When the component has sufficiently spent the enough of time in the oven, it is then removed for cooling. This can be done by air or water, or sometimes a mixture of both which generates a cool mist. When the material cools, it reduces somewhat for ease of extraction from the mould. This is yet another measure that relies a lot on the correct timing, since rapid cooling reduces the material too quick, causing bending of the material.

4. The unloading or de-moulding step.
Once the product within te mould has cooled adequately, the person taking care of the procedure can then remove the completed item from the mold. The procedure is repeated from the beginning, supplying a number of similar product lines.
