The Rotomoulding Procedure in Detail

This moulding method has been used since ancient times for creatingvseverl products. Egyptians as an example, used rotocasting techniques in the manufacturing of ceramics. 1. Mold preparation.
A fixed amount of polymer in powder form is packed into a hollow mold. The mold is usually crafted from cast aluminium or sheet steel component. The color tone wanted for the finished item is pre compounded into the polymer. The most often used powder resin is polythene, but polyvinyl chloride and nylon can also be used in this design of plastic manufacturing.

Preheating of the oven starts, and it can be done by either conduction, convection or sometimes radiation. It is heated up to temperatures between 500-700F. The mold with the powdered polymer is then secured and inserted into the oven.

2. The heat and fusion process.
Once within the oven, the mold is revolved on two axis so the powdered polymer melts from the heat and coats the inside if the mould. The spinning is done slowly, about 20 spins per min. Something that is critical at this moment is the period of time the mould will spend inside the oven. If it overstays, the component will lose value and strength, generating a faulty product. If it is taken out from the oven prematurely, the polymer will not have flowed properly, which produces bubbles in the completed item.

3. Mould cooling.
When the material has completely spent the right amount of time in the oven, it is then taken out for cooling. This may be done by air or water, or sometimes a mixture of both which creates a cool mist. When the material cools, it shrinks slightly for ease of extraction from the mold. This is another step that depends upon a lot on the right timing, since rapid cooling reduces the material too rapidly, causing bending of the item.

4. The unloading or de-moulding phase.
As soon as the product within te mold has cooled correctly, the molder taking care of the operation can then take out the completed item from the mould. The process is repeated from the start, giving a series of exact products.
