The Rotomoulding Method in Detail

1. Mould prep work.
A predetermined measure of polymer in powder form is packed into a hollow mould. The mold is usually made of cast aluminium or sheet steel material. The most generally used powder resin is polythene, but polyvinyl chloride and nylon can also be used in this format of plastic engineering.

Pre-heating of the oven follows, and it may be done by either conduction, convection or sometimes radiation. It is heated to temperatures between 500-700F. The mold with the powdered polymer is then sealed and inserted into the oven.

2. The heat and fusion procedure.
Once placed into the oven, the mold is spun on two axis so the powdered polymer melts from the heat and layers the inside if the mold. The rotation is done slowly and gradually, about 20 rotations per min. One thing that is crucial at this moment is the amount of time the mold will spend within the oven. If it stays to long, the product will lose value and durability, generating a poor product. If it is taken out from the oven prematurely, the polymer will not have flowed correctly, which produces bubbles in the finished product line.

3. Mold cooling down.
When the material has completely spent the correct amount of time in the oven, it is then extracted for cooling. This can be done by air or water, or sometimes a mixture of both which a cool mist. When the component cools, it reduces a little for ease of removal from the mould. This is yet another step that depends upon a lot on the correct timing, since quick cooling reduces the material too fast, causing bending of the item.

4. The removing or de-molding step.
As soon as the material within te mold has cooled successfully, the person handling the procedure can then take out the finalized product from the mould. The function is repeated from the beginning, giving a number of similar product lines.
