The Rotomolding Process Components

1. Mold prep work.
A predetermined volume of polymer in grain form is loaded into a hollow mould. The mould is usually made of cast aluminium or sheet steel material. The coloring preferred for the finished item is pre compounded into the polymer. The most generally used powder resin is polythene, but polyvinyl chloride and nylon can also be used in this design of plastic production.

Pre-heating of the oven starts, and it may be done by either conduction, convection or sometimes radiation. It is heated up to temperatures between 500-700F. The mould with the powdered polymer is then locked and positioned within the oven.

2. The heat and fusion procedure.
Once placed into the oven, the mould is rotated on two axis so the powdered polymer liquefies from the heat and layers the inside if the mould. The turning is done gradually, about 20 rotations per min. Something that is vital at this moment is the amount of time the mold will spend inside the oven. If it stays to long, the material will lose value and strength, creating a poor item. If it is taken out from the oven prematurely, the polymer will not have flowed correctly, which creates bubbles in the finished item.

3. Mold cooling down.
When the component has completely spent the correct amount of time in the oven, it is then removed for cooling. This may be done by air or water, or sometimes a mixture of both which generates a cool mist. When the product cools, it reduces a little for ease of removal from the mold. This is one more measure that depends upon a lot on the correct timing, since rapid cooling reduces the material too quick, causing bending of the item.

4. The removing or de-moulding phase.
Once the component within te mould has cooled correctly, the person managing the operation can then take out the finalized item from the mould. The process is repeated from the beginning, supplying a number of similar products.
