The Rotomolding Method in Detail

This moulding procedure has been used since ancient times for creatingvseverl products. Egyptians for instance, employed rotomoulding systems in the making of ceramics. The Swiss were also utilizing this rotation type to create hollow chocolate eggs. Some plastic products in the USA were created using this technique some time between 1940 and 1950. The process has however taken very long to catch on because it was considered as being a moderately slow process

1. Mold preparation.
A fixed amount of polymer in grain form is loaded into a hollow mould. The mold is usually comprised of cast aluminium or sheet steel substance. The colour preferred for the end product is pre compounded into the polymer. The most typically used powder resin is polythene, but polyvinyl chloride and nylon can also be used in this design of plastic manufacturing.

Preheating of the oven follows, and it can be done by either conduction, convection or sometimes radiation. It is warmed to temperatures between 500-700F. The mold with the powdered polymer is then secured and installed inside the oven.

2. The heating up and fusion process.
Once placed into the oven, the mold is rotated on two axis so the powdered polymer melts from the heat and layers the inside if the mould. The spinning is done gradually, about 20 spins per minute. The main thing that is important at this moment is the period of time the mould will spend inside the oven. If it overstays, the material will lose value and strength, producing a weak product. If it is taken out from the oven too early, the polymer will not have melted properly, which produces bubbles in the finalized product line.

3. Mold cooling down.
When the product has sufficiently spent the enough of time in the oven, it is then taken out for cooling. This may be done by air or water, or sometimes a mixture of both which creates a cool mist. When the component cools, it reduces somewhat for ease of extraction from the mould. This is an additional step that depends a lot on the ideal timing, since quick cooling reduces the material too quick, causing warping of the product.

4. The discharging or de-moulding step.
Once the material within te mold has cooled properly, the person taking care of the procedure can then remove the finished item from the mold. The process is repeated from the beginning, providing a number of identical products.
