The Rotomolding Procedure in Detail

1. Mould preparation.

Pre-heating of the oven follows, and it can be done by either conduction, convection or sometimes radiation. It is warmed to temperatures between 500-700F. The mold with the powdered polymer is then sealed and put into the oven.

2. The heat and fusion step.
Once inside the oven, the mold is turned on two axis so the powdered polymer liquefies from the heat and layers the inside if the mould. The turning is done gradually, about 20 rotations per sixty seconds. One thing that is crucial at this point is the amount of time the mold will spend within the oven. If it stays to long, the product will lose stability and durability, making a faulty item. If it is extracted from the oven too early, the polymer will not have liquefied properly, which creates bubbles in the finished item.

3. Mould cooling down.
When the product has sufficiently spent the enough of time in the oven, it is then taken out for cooling. This can be done by air or water, or sometimes a mixture of both which generates a cool mist. When the material cools, it reduces somewhat for ease of removal from the mould. This is one more measure that depends a lot on the right timing, since quick cooling shrinks the material too quick, causing bending of the item.

4. The un-loading or de-molding phase.
As soon as the material within te mould has cooled properly, the molder handling the process can then remove the finalized item from the mould. The process is repeated from the beginning, supplying a series of identical items.
