The Rotomoulding Process in Detail

1. Mold preparation.
A fixed measure of polymer in grain form is packed into a hollow mould. The mould is usually crafted from cast aluminium or sheet steel component. The most often used powder resin is polythene, but polyvinyl chloride and nylon can also be used in this style of plastic assembly.

Preheating of the oven starts, and it can be done by either conduction, convection or sometimes radiation. It is heated up to temperatures between 500-700F. The mold with the powdered polymer is then secured and installed into the oven.

2. The heating up and fusion phase.
Once inside the oven, the mold is revolved on two axis so the powdered polymer liquefies from the heat and layers the inside if the mold. The spinning is done slowly and gradually, about 20 rotations per minute. One thing that is crucial at this point is the amount of time the mould will spend within the oven. If it stays to long, the component will lose stability and durability, generating a weak product. If it is taken out from the oven prematurely, the polymer will not have liquefied properly, which creates bubbles in the finalized product line.

3. Mold cooling.
When the product has sufficiently spent the correct amount of time in the oven, it is then extracted for cooling. This can be done by air or water, or sometimes a mixture of both which creates a cool mist. When the component cools, it reduces slightly for ease of extraction from the mould. This is an additional measure that depends a lot on the ideal timing, since rapid cooling shrinks the material too quick, causing warping of the item.

4. The un-loading or de-molding phase.
When the product within te mould has cooled successfully, the molder managing the process can then take out the completed product from the mould. The process is repeated from the start, supplying a series of identical items.
