The Rotomoulding Process in Detail

1. Mould preparation.
A fixed measure of polymer in grain form is filled into a hollow mould. The mold is usually constructed from cast aluminium or sheet steel material. The colour intended for the end product is pre compounded into the polymer. The most generally used powder resin is polythene, but polyvinyl chloride and nylon can also be used in this design of plastic manufacturing.

Pre-heating of the oven follows, and it can be done by either conduction, convection or sometimes radiation. It is heated up to temperatures between 500-700F. The mold with the powdered polymer is then secured and installed within the oven.

2. The heating up and fusion step.
Once placed into the oven, the mold is rotated on two axis so the powdered polymer liquefies from the heat and overlays the inside if the mold. The spinning is done gradually, about 20 spins per sixty seconds. The main thing that is crucial at this moment is the amount of time the mould will spend within the oven. If it stays to long, the component will lose value and strength, producing a faulty product. If it is removed from the oven too early, the polymer will not have liquefied correctly, which develops bubbles in the finished item.

3. Mould cooling.
When the material has sufficiently spent the enough of time in the oven, it is then removed for cooling. This can be done by air or water, or sometimes a mixture of both which generates a cool mist. When the product cools, it shrinks slightly for ease of extraction from the mould. This is one more step that relies a lot on the ideal timing, since quick cooling decreases the material too quickly, causing bending of the material.

4. The offloading or de-moulding step.
Once the product within te mould has cooled adequately, the molder taking care of the process can then extract the completed item from the mold. The technique is repeated from the start, supplying a series of identical items.
