The Rotomolding Process Components

1. Mould preparation.

Pre-heating of the oven follows, and it can be done by either conduction, convection or sometimes radiation. It is heated up to temperatures between 500-700F. The mold with the powdered polymer is then locked and installed into the oven.

2. The heat and fusion process.
Once within the oven, the mold is spun on two axis so the powdered polymer melts from the heat and overlays the inside if the mold. The turning is done slowly, about 20 spins per sixty seconds. The main thing that is important at this moment is the period of time the mould will spend within the oven. If it stays to long, the material will lose stability and durability, producing a weak item. If it is taken out from the oven too early, the polymer will not have flowed properly, which produces bubbles in the finished item.

3. Mould cooling.
When the component has completely spent the right amount of time in the oven, it is then removed for cooling. This can be done by air or water, or sometimes a mixture of both which generates a cool mist. When the product cools, it shrinks slightly for ease of extraction from the mould. This is another step that depends upon a lot on the correct timing, since quick cooling decreases the material too quick, causing bending of the item.

4. The discharging or de-moulding step.
As soon as the component within te mold has cooled effectively, the molder handling the process can then extract the finalized product from the mould. The technique is repeated from the beginning, making a number of similar products.
