The Rotomolding Procedure in Detail

This moulding process has been used since ancient times for creatingvseverl items. Egyptians for instance, employed rotocasting techniques in the creating of ceramics. The procedure has however taken long to take affect because it was thought of to be a rather slow process

1. Mold readying.
A predetermined volume of polymer in grain form is filled into a hollow mould. The mould is usually comprised of cast aluminium or sheet steel component. The color tone needed for the finished item is pre compounded into the polymer. The most often used powder resin is polythene, but polyvinyl chloride and nylon can also be used in this type of plastic assembly.

Pre-heating of the oven follows, and it may be done by either conduction, convection or sometimes radiation. It is heated up to temperatures between 500-700F. The mold with the powdered polymer is then locked and inserted into the oven.

2. The heat and fusion phase.
Once inside the oven, the mold is rotated on two axis so the powdered polymer melts from the heat and layers the inside if the mould. The turning is done slowly, about 20 rotations per minute. Something that is important at this moment is the period of time the mold will spend inside the oven. If it stays to long, the product will lose value and strength, making a poor item. If it is taken out from the oven too early, the polymer will not have liquefied correctly, which creates bubbles in the completed product.

3. Mould cooling.
When the material has sufficiently spent the enough of time in the oven, it is then taken out for cooling. This can be done by air or water, or sometimes a mixture of both which a cool mist. When the material cools, it reduces slightly for ease of extraction from the mold. This is yet another measure that depends upon a lot on the correct timing, since quick cooling shrinks the material too rapidly, causing bending of the item.

4. The unloading or de-molding step.
As soon as the material inside te mold has cooled effectively, the person taking care of the procedure can then take out the finalized item from the mold. The procedure is repeated from the beginning, providing a series of identical items.
