The Rotomoulding Process in Detail

1. Mold prep work.
A fixed measure of polymer in particle form is packed into a hollow mold. The mould is usually built from cast aluminium or sheet steel substance. The most commonly used powder resin is polythene, but polyvinyl chloride and nylon can also be used in this style of plastic production.

Pre-heating of the oven starts, and it can be done by either conduction, convection or sometimes radiation. It is heated up to temperatures between 500-700F. The mold with the powdered polymer is then sealed and placed inside the oven.

2. The heating up and fusion procedure.
Once within the oven, the mold is spun on two axis so the powdered polymer liquefies from the heat and coats the inside if the mold. The turning is done slowly and gradually, about 20 rotations per sixty seconds. One thing that is crucial at this moment is the period of time the mould will spend inside the oven. If it stays to long, the material will lose stability and durability, producing a poor item. If it is taken out from the oven prematurely, the polymer will not have melted correctly, which generates bubbles in the completed product.

3. Mould cooling.
When the material has completely spent the right amount of time in the oven, it is then taken out for cooling. This may be done by air or water, or sometimes a mixture of both which creates a cool mist. When the material cools, it reduces slightly for ease of removal from the mold. This is another measure that relies a lot on the ideal timing, since rapid cooling decreases the material too quick, causing bending of the product.

4. The unloading or de-molding step.
Once the product inside te mold has cooled properly, the molder taking care of the process can then remove the finished item from the mould. The technique is repeated from the start, making a number of identical items.
