The Roto-Molding Process Components

1. Mold preparation.
A fixed quantity of polymer in particle form is loaded into a hollow mold. The mold is usually composeded of cast aluminium or sheet steel component. The color needed for the final item is pre compounded into the polymer. The most typically used powder resin is polythene, but polyvinyl chloride and nylon can also be used in this format of plastic manufacturing.

Pre-heating of the oven starts, and it may be done by either conduction, convection or sometimes radiation. It is warmed to temperatures between 500-700F. The mould with the powdered polymer is then secured and put inside the oven.

2. The heating and fusion process.
Once placed into the oven, the mold is revolved on two axis so the powdered polymer liquefies from the heat and coats the inside if the mould. The rotation is done gradually, about 20 rotations per min. The main thing that is vital at this moment is the amount of time the mold will spend within the oven. If it stays to long, the component will lose stability and durability, making a weak item. If it is taken out from the oven prematurely, the polymer will not have liquefied properly, which produces bubbles in the finished product.

3. Mold cooling down.
When the material has completely spent the correct amount of time in the oven, it is then extracted for cooling. This may be done by air or water, or sometimes a mixture of both which a cool mist. When the component cools, it shrinks a little for ease of extraction from the mould. This is yet another measure that depends upon a lot on the right timing, since rapid cooling decreases the material too rapidly, causing warping of the item.

4. The un-loading or de-molding phase.
As soon as the product within te mold has cooled successfully, the person handling the procedure can then take out the finalized item from the mold. The process is repeated from the beginning, supplying a number of similar product lines.
