The Rotomolding Procedure in Detail

1. Mold fitting.
A fixed volume of polymer in powder form is packed into a hollow mould. The mold is usually built from cast aluminium or sheet steel component. The color wanted for the end item is pre compounded into the polymer. The most often used powder resin is polythene, but polyvinyl chloride and nylon can also be used in this type of plastic manufacturing.

Preheating of the oven follows, and it can be done by either conduction, convection or sometimes radiation. It is warmed to temperatures between 500-700F. The mould with the powdered polymer is then secured and put into the oven.

2. The heating up and fusion process.
Once placed into the oven, the mould is spun on two axis so the powdered polymer melts from the heat and overlays the inside if the mould. The rotation is done slowly, about 20 rotations per minute. One thing that is crucial at this point is the amount of time the mould will spend within the oven. If it overstays, the material will lose value and strength, producing a weak item. If it is extracted from the oven prematurely, the polymer will not have liquefied correctly, which produces bubbles in the finished item.

3. Mold cooling.
When the component has completely spent the right amount of time in the oven, it is then taken out for cooling. This can be done by air or water, or sometimes a mixture of both which creates a cool mist. When the material cools, it reduces somewhat for ease of extraction from the mold. This is yet another procedure that relies a lot on the correct timing, since quick cooling reduces the material too quick, causing warping of the material.

4. The removing or de-moulding step.
When the product inside te mould has cooled properly, the molder handling the procedure can then extract the finalized item from the mould. The process is repeated from the beginning, giving a number of similar items.
